To work as a cosmetologist in Florida, you need a state license. If you already have a license from another state, you might be able to get a Florida license without taking a new test. This is called obtaining a "license by endorsement."
Here is what you need to do:
Your Current License:
You must have an active license from another state. (Note: If your license is from Alaska, you cannot use this specific form and must apply a different way.)
Age:
You must be at least 16 years old or have a high school diploma.
HIV/AIDS Class:
You must take the 4-Hour Initial HIV/AIDS Course. To begin the HIV course, go here. You need to finish this class within two years prior to sending in your application.
No Exam:
If you qualify for a license by endorsement, you do not have to take the Florida cosmetology exam.
Payment:
You have to pay a fee with your application. If you are in the military or a military spouse, you might be able to get a discount or have the fee waived.
How to Apply:
You can fill out the form online or print it out.
Questions:
If you need help, you can call the DBPR at 850-487-1395.
